They Matter, They Do

     "Araw ng mga manggagawa" or Philippine Labor Day is a public holiday, celebrated every 1st day of May. It is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers, therefore a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. However, how significant Labor Day is?

 

     Philippines, being led by American government years ago, received unfair conditions and treatment from them. Thus, this led to Filipinos protesting and demanding for fair wages and better working conditions from the American-led government. The protests and demands resulted to Philippine Assembly passing a bill recognizing May 1 as Labor Day. It was declared a national holiday. Therefore, with the existence of Labor Day, issues regarding working conditions for the labor sector, including eight-hour working days, an end to child labor, equal labor standards for women, and employers’ liability to their employees were raised. It is a day where issues that undermine the rights of employees were given attention.

 

     Hence, Labor Day is important. It is a day where issues and concerns were raised and given with attention. It is a day that honors and recognizes the labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the Country. Thus, making Labor Day a significant day for the people.
