A Meaningful Festival
Festival is strongly
recommended to enjoy the festive moments to the utmost as they are important to
our social lives. But as soon as COVID-19 entered the country, all festivals
were temporarily suspended. Then, as the Philippines begins to recover from the
COVID-19 pandemic, fiestas and celebrations are beginning to return, providing
the Filipino people with a well-needed dose of levity. The celebration that was
observed this month in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, was the Kannawidan Festival. It is an
annual festival celebrating the founding of the province of Ilocos Sur,
Philippines every 2nd of February. It may be a well-known or popular festival,
but how important is it?
Festivals are considered to
be exceptional occasions for joyously, peacefully, and harmoniously honoring
tradition, culture, and legacy. The Kannawidan Celebration fits the description
as well. Looking at the name itself, Kannawidan Ylocos, which comes from the
word tawid, means tradition, legacy, and/or heritage when translated into
English. These demonstrates that the festival's founding purpose was to raise
public awareness of and encourage the preservation of the local tradition,
culture, legacy, and traditions. Later, as time went on, the influence grew
stronger and was made an opportunity to showcase local products, artistry, and
craftsmanship. Additionally, it was developed to support the local tourism
industry.
The Kannawidan Festival is
more valuable than you may imagine. It was never just an empty
celebration. It is a significant celebration and carries tradition, legacy,
culture, and heritage. You can participate in events that showcase its culture
and history and be entertained by it. Without a doubt, the Kannawidan Festival
is noteworthy and significant.
